What are these secrets to long lustrous hair? How can the rest of the world incorporate it into their hair growth regiment? In this article, I narrate my journey to having healthy long hair after experiencing struggle to gain strength and shine back into my hair using ancient Chinese women secret.

I’ve always had strong shiny lustrous hair since birth. When I joined boarding school, I became used to a culture of washing my hair every day, applying excessive processed hair food, and blow-drying hair almost every other day.

I must confess, within the seven years of middle school, my hair shed a lot.  I came in with very good hair and came out with worn out, bald spots and dull looking hair all because of incorporating poor hair routines into my hair regiment.

Throughout my campus life my hair was stuck. Burdened it with excessive blow drying, and the constant use of inappropriate hair products, which resulted to me losing my edges and having bald spots. The funny thing is I didn’t even notice all that damage until the end of October 2016. When a friend of mine took a picture of me from behind and it looked as if I had shave under my ears and front. My hair had lost its color, was very dull and had lost its true texture.

I didn’t know how to transition to natural hair. However, I started incorporating few regiments which were ridiculous to be honest but help in my journey of growing healthy natural hair.

The first regiment I made for my hair was a mixture of eggs, oils, avocado and banana and it was promising to grow almost 2-5 inches of hair overnight. Absurd right? I rarely don’t recall experiencing any changes. I came to learn later that my hair couldn’t even grow overnight because it was extremely damaged.  It was dehydrated, lacked enough protein, strength and moisture. Legitimately, this is an extreme deep conditioner, but see, it didn’t work on my hair.

I later flexed to onions. I hoped from what I read on the internet, the onion would regrow my edges and probably activate the dead hair follicles on the rest of my head. Instead I got burnt. For real, you could see black spots at my edges and my hair smelled awful for weeks even after washing and rewashing.

From there I gave up on the regiments but continued to wash my hair daily with a shampoo and deep conditioning with a blend of olive oil and tea tree oil conditioners.

Early 2017, I realized my hair was far damaged and it was shedding every time I touched the strands. I went on Google again and learnt that my hair was damaged because it was not nourished and dehydrate. I wasn’t moisturizing on a daily or used products that favored nourishment of my hair.

The most important part of my discovery of Yao women rice water for hair is how to prepare it. This became my signature formulation.

  • I rinse a cup of rice to get it clean.
  • Place the rice in a bowl for more than 8 hours and stir occasionally.
  • Check on it if it starts to ferment then strain the water into another bowl.
  • Put it in the fridge to stop the fermentation process. Because its odors I usually add a few drops of lavender essential oil to bring a good scent.
  • I use it daily by massaging it into the scalp and then rinse afterwards with water.
