In a previous article, we gave you a breakdown on what UTIs are, what causes them and how you can prevent them. In this article, we list out 10 home remedies you can use to prevent and treat UTIs. Best thing is that these remedies are readily available in your kitchen or in the market and will give you no hustle in preparing. Lets go!

1. Cranberry Products

Cranberry and cranberry juice has been recommended for feminine hygiene and health for ages. The two contain a polyphenol that weakens the UTI bacteria.

2. Garlic

As one of the home remedies to prevent and treat UTIs, Garlic has traditionally been used to treat many illnesses. Many studies have confirmed the effectiveness of Garlic in weakening and killing the bacteria responsible for UTIs.

This is how you use Garlic:

  • Take two pellets of garlic and crush them with a pestle and mortar.
  • Boil a cup of water and add it to the garlic extract
  • Wait for it to cool and mix up.
  • Drink this three times a day for three days, and the UTI should go away.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been shown to cause acidity in Urine which weakens bacteria in the UTI. Consuming foods rich in Vitamin C like citrus fruits, oranges, peppers, brocoli, potatoes, and many more listed here will prevent you from UTIs.

4. D-Mannose

D-Mannose is a type of sugar similar to Glucose which can be found in many fruits and foods. Recent studies have shown that D-Mannose is as effective as anti-biotics in curing UTIs. You can find D-Mannose in:

  • cranberries (and cranberry juice)
  • oranges 
  • apples 
  • peaches
  • mangoes
  • legumes

6. Hygiene Sex Habits

I cannot stress out this enough. Always flush out the bacteria that accumulates after sex and drink water. Also, make them wash their hands before touching your couchie!

7. Probiotics

Probiotics are the good bacteria found in your body. Increasing them with supplements like Yoghurt can reduce the bad bacteria by increase the good ones.

8. Grapefruit Seeds

Researchers found Grapefruits seeds to be utterly effective for treating UTIs when taken orally for two weeks.
